Prevent Varicose Veins During Pregnancy

May 08, 20232 min read

The vein specialists at Palm Vein Center explain why varicose veins develop during pregnancy and what can be done to prevent them.

During pregnancy, a woman’s blood volume increases to support her growing fetus. Although this biological process is necessary for the health of a baby, it decreases the volume of blood flowing from a woman’s legs to her pelvis, causing veins within her legs to enlarge. If you have a family history of varicose veins or your occupation increases your risk of developing varicose veins, you may want to consider some of the following tips.

Exercise

First, it’s imperative you perform some form of exercise each day, and only if it’s been “okayed” by your obstetrician. Exercise can be as simple as taking 10-15-minute walks each day to help keep the blood in your legs flowing adequately. If your doctor gives you the go-ahead, you may benefit from light cardio on stationary machines such as the elliptical and bike.

Elevate Your Legs and Avoid Crossing Your Legs

In addition to exercise, you may want to elevate your legs each time you sit. This will help prevent your blood from pooling in your veins. It’s also important you avoid crossing your legs while seated. Doing so may increase unwanted pressure on your legs, causing your blood to once again, pool in your veins. If your occupation requires prolonged sitting, make sure you get up frequently and flex your ankles and legs periodically.

Comfortable Clothing

Wearing comfortable, non-constrictive clothing is an absolute must for women who are pregnant. Make sure you wear clothes that fit well and don’t apply additional pressure to your thighs or calves. Additionally, it's imperative you maintain a healthy weight. Of course, gaining weight is natural with pregnancy (and healthy!), but it’s important you stay within the limits your doctor sets for you. Gaining too much weight can put stress on your circulatory system.

When to Consult a Professional

Women who develop varicose veins during pregnancy should wait about 3 months after giving birth to see if they go away. If they do not, call Palm Vein Center to schedule an appointment! We will determine the best treatment regimen for you!
