Treatments

Venous disease refers to problems with the vein walls or valves. Atherosclerosis, spider veins, and varicose veins disrupt blood flow while increasing pressure within veins, causing blood to move inefficiently, or in some cases, backward.

Although troublesome, most vein diseases can be mitigated through conservative treatment or minimally invasive vein surgery. Whether you have small spider veins or large varicose veins, our expert vein specialists will identify possible health concerns and provide treatment options that manage or effectively treat your vein disease.

Causes of Vein Disease

Conservative treatment is usually reserved for those with mild cases of vein disease, including but not limited to, spider veins or relatively small varicose veins. Examples of conservative therapies generally include:

  • Exercising Diet modifications

  • Lifestyle changes

  • Elevating legs

  • Losing weight

  • Therapeutic massage

  • Compression stockings

  • Avoiding prolonged standing or sitting

  • Avoiding frequent or excessive crossing of the legs.

Compression Stockings by Medi®

Palm Vein Center is a proud retailer of Medi®, state-of-the-art compression stockings that are used to conservatively treat conditions, including:

  • Spider veins

  • Varicose veins

  • Edema

Medi Assure stockings can also help prevent deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) and may even help alleviate symptoms of itching and heaviness in the legs.

Palm Vein Center distributes Medi Assure for several reasons; however, the most notable is our belief that this brand is truly one of a kind. Compared to traditional stockings, Medi Assure compression stockings are more comfortable and blend into the skin to disguise vein conditions as they heal. They come in a variety of styles, including open-toe, closed-toe, wide calf, maternity, and more.

Our office has a wide selection of styles, sizes, and colors. If the patient does not see the product they want, we can order the product and have it delivered to our clinic. We want patients to not only have options, but options that work best for them and their bodies. To get the most out of the patients’ Medi® stockings, we offer custom measurements in-office for the most accurate fit for maximum comfort.

Light Guided Sclerotherapy

Light guided sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive injection procedure that heals spider veins and medium-sized (reticular) veins. To ensure placement accuracy, the injection is typically administered using an ultrasound device or high-intensity, LED light.

The specialists at Palm Vein Center may recommend sclerotherapy as an alternative to minimally invasive vein surgery for patients with non-threatening, but visibly impaired veins or who suffer from Pelvic Congestion Syndrome. This treatment provides both functional and cosmetic benefits thanks to its unique, FDA-approved sclerosing solution (saline and Polidocanol®).

Depending on the size or type of vein being treated or the condition being treated, our specialists may use different strengths of sclerosant to effectively collapse and subsequently heal the vein. Your vein specialist may recommend several follow-up treatments to ensure the best results.

Asclera

Asclera is a medication that is used during a sclerotherapy procedure. This polidocanol injection treats common vein conditions such as spider veins and small varicose veins. At Palm Vein Center, we use Asclera because it produces a high success rate, and over 85% of patients report being satisfied with their treatment. This is about 20% more than other leading treatments, including sodium tetradecyl sulfate (STS).

When a patient comes in for the Asclera treatment, they can expect the procedure to last between 30 and 45 minutes. Asclera works by encouraging debris and blood platelets to connect with the lining of blood vessels. Over time, this can allow the blood to clot and be replaced with tissue. Patients may see results within a week when paired with the use of their compression stockings.

Before seeking the Asclera treatment, tell your Palm Vein Center physician if you are pregnant, plan on taking a long flight, or have a known allergy to polidocanol.

Endovenous Radio-Frequency Treatment

Endovenous Radio-Frequency ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that treats asymptomatic and symptomatic venous reflux disease. The vein specialists at Palm Vein Center perform this procedure called Venefit™, formerly known as the VNUS Closure® procedure, under local anesthesia and ultrasound guidance. During treatment, a physician inserts the Convidien ClosureFAST™ catheter into the diseased vein to begin administering radiofrequency waves using the ClosureRFG™ (radio-frequency generator).

The catheter heats the vein in 7cm segments within 20-second treatment cycles. This causes the vein to shrink and seal itself. Once the vein is sealed, blood will re-route from the diseased vein to healthy veins nearby. Shortly after the Venefit™ procedure is complete, your vein specialist will apply a small bandage over the insertion site and administer additional compression using various wraps.

Although walking and mild activities are encouraged following the procedure, patients should avoid prolonged standing and strenuous activities. Your vein specialist may instruct the application of compression stockings for at least three weeks post-operatively. Endovenous Laser Treatment

Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT) is a minimally invasive thermal ablation procedure that effectively blocks off damaged veins. This treatment option is considered an alternative to endovenous radiofrequency ablation for those suffering from saphenous vein reflux disease. EVLT is generally performed on an outpatient basis using local anesthesia and ultrasound guidance.

During the procedure, a physician inserts a thin laser fiber into the diseased vein. Once the fiber is in place, it is activated and pulled through the vein to emit light and deliver energy. This process causes the vein to close, and seal shut as the fiber is pulled through the vein. Once the fiber approaches the insertion site, the physician will stop the laser energy delivery and remove the device from the vein. Following EVLT, the physician will apply a small bandage over the operation site and assist the patient with putting on compression stockings. These stockings must be worn 1-2 weeks after the procedure to minimize the risk of complication.

Patients will be asked to elevate the leg(s) 1-2 hours a day for 1-2 weeks after EVLT. Patients may also be advised to avoid excessive physical activity, hot baths, and prolonged sitting. To learn more about Endovenous Laser Treatment, please call our office.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

Ambulatory phlebectomy is a minimally invasive procedure for varicose veins. Before a patient can be considered for ambulatory phlebectomy, a physician at Palm Vein Center evaluates whether the patient’s varicose veins are the result of saphenous vein reflux disease. If they are, this treatment option may not be recommended.

Various procedures or therapies may be performed prior to, or following, ambulatory phlebectomy to better alleviate the symptoms of varicose veins. The procedure requires small incisions (less than 2 – 4mm or 1/16 to 1/8 inch) to be made vertically along the damaged vein. The physician performs several tasks to successfully remove, dissect, and compress damaged veins.

Ambulatory phlebectomy is usually completed in under an hour depending on the vein’s size, location, and complexity.
